The good news is that it’s really not all that complicated. You don’t need what those videos are selling.

Do Your Kidneys Actually Need a Detox?
Let’s start with the basic fact right here: Your kidneys are a detoxifying organ. They already cleanse your blood all day long, every day.
Every day, they filter your entire blood volume dozens of times, pulling out waste products and sending them out as urine. There’s nothing you need to do to activate that, because it’s already running all day long.
So where did the whole idea of a “kidney cleanse” come from? Maybe it started with a real health worry, such as kidney stones, urinary tract infections, or feeling puffy and sluggish, followed by a food list that sounds like it’s going to do something dramatic.
You’ve seen the list: apple cider vinegar, lemons, cranberries, basil, pomegranates, grapes. You’ve probably seen some version of this list several times already.
But the truth is that several of these foods do have a real researched role. They’re just not a cleanse. They support two things your kidneys actually depend on: having enough fluid moving through them, and a lower dietary burden of the substances that form stones or strain filtration over time.
So you need to support kidney function, but they don’t need a cleanse. Let’s look into this a bit more.
Hydration: The One Thing the Research Agrees On
Water. Water is the most important thing for your kidneys. You need enough fluid intake, and it is the single thing that makes the biggest difference. Researcher Loris Borghi and colleagues at the University of Parma ran a five-year randomized, prospective study of patients who had already formed a calcium kidney stone. Half were told to simply drink more water. The other half received no specific instruction.
They found stone recurrence over five years was roughly cut in half in the high-water group (12 percent) compared to the group that made no change (27 percent), and the stones that did recur took nearly twice as long to show up.
Here is a real randomized trial showing the simplest, cheapest intervention on the list, just plain water, changed whether people formed a stone or not. Start there. Don’t worry about finding some special kidney tea or product for your kidneys. Just up your water intake. That’s the strongest evidence that exists.
Do yourself a favor and drink purified water. Reverse osmosis (RO) water or distilled water is a great start.
You can add back in trace minerals or a squeeze of lemon to replace the minerals that were removed. If you’ve had a source of water that’s very full of inorganic minerals for many years, we have found it helpful to start with distilled water to give your kidneys a break.
What the Research Says About Kidney Stone Prevention
Kidney stones are the reason most people go looking for a “kidney cleanse” in the first place, even if they don’t say so directly. Maybe that’s you, too. So let’s look at what actually changes the risk of getting a kidney stone.

Researcher Gary Curhan and colleagues followed over 91,000 women for 12 years as part of the Nurses’ Health Study. Women who ate the most dietary calcium, from food, had a 35 percent lower risk of forming a kidney stone than women who ate the least. But women who took calcium as a supplement had a slightly higher risk.
This seems a bit counterintuitive if you’ve been told calcium causes stones. Dietary calcium binds oxalate in your gut, preventing absorption of either of them, so they never reach your kidneys. Supplemental calcium, taken separately from food, doesn’t get that same chance. So the takeaway isn’t “avoid calcium.” It’s “get it from food, always take calcium supplements, if any, alongside meals, the way a plant-based pattern naturally does.”
A separate 14-year study by Taylor, Stampfer and Curhan of over 45,000 men found that higher magnesium and potassium intake, each independently, lowered stone risk, as did higher fluid intake. In this study, they also noted that men who took more than 1,000 milligrams of vitamin C every day had a 41% higher risk of kidney stones. What about what you drink? Researcher Pietro Ferraro and colleagues tracked beverage habits in nearly 200,000 people. Sugar-sweetened cola raised stone risk by 23 percent, and sugar-sweetened non-cola drinks raised it by 33 percent. Coffee, tea, wine, beer, and orange juice were all associated with lower risk.
Sugar-sweetened beverages are out for kidney stone risk. Water is still best, but coffee, tea, wine, beer, and orange juice all have this in common: they’re not sugary.
What About Lemon Water and Cranberry Juice?
These two show up on almost every kidney cleanse list you’ll find, so let’s take a look at them.
Lemon juice really does raise urinary citrate, and citrate helps keep calcium from crystallizing into stones. A small study published in the Journal of Urology followed 11 patients with low urinary citrate who drank lemonade regularly for an average of 44 months. Their stone formation rate dropped from one stone per year to about one stone every eight years.
This was a really small study, but drinking some lemon water in the morning is a low-risk habit that makes sense. It’s not necessarily a cure, but it’s not a cleanse either. It’s just a great habit.
Cranberry juice’s reputation is more accurate than it used to be. A 2023 update to the Cochrane Review on cranberry products, pulling 50 studies and 8,857 participants, found that cranberry probably does reduce the risk of symptomatic culture-verified UTIs in women with recurrent UTIs, in children, and in people made susceptible to UTIs by a medical intervention.
So cranberries are helpful, but not necessarily to everybody. The same review found little or no benefit in elderly institutionalized adults, in pregnant women, or in people with neuromuscular bladder dysfunction. Those are more complicated situations.
Cranberry also didn’t outperform antibiotics. I wouldn’t expect cranberries to outperform antibiotics, but if it does nearly as well without causing antibiotic-resistant strains to multiply, that’s a big win. Cranberries did outperform probiotics as well. If you’re a woman with a history of recurrent UTIs, cranberry has real moderate-certainty evidence behind it. You should give it a try. But if your health is more complicated, don’t count on it as a silver bullet.
Building a Plant-Based Pattern That Supports Your Kidneys
When you look at all the evidence together, a pattern emerges. The things that lower kidney stone risk are what you find in a whole-food, plant-based way of eating: plenty of fluids, potassium-rich produce, magnesium-rich foods, calcium from foods rather than isolated supplements, and no sugar-sweetened beverages.
