Learn how to make perfectly crispy tofu every time with this easy method! Whether you pan-fry, bake, or use an air fryer, this tofu turns out golden, flavorful, and delicious. Perfect for bowls, salads, wraps, or munching directly from the pan!

If you’re looking for perfectly crispy tofu with a golden, crunchy exterior and a tender, chewy center, this is the recipe to bookmark. I make crispy tofu all the time because it goes with just about everything: grain bowls, salads, wraps, stir fries, curries, you name it. Whether you want pan-fried tofu, baked tofu, or air fryer tofu, this recipe works beautifully. Choose the cooking method that fits your mood (or how much time you have), and you’ll end up with crispy, golden tofu every time. Toss it into your favorite meal, drizzle it with your favorite sauce, or honestly, just eat it straight off the pan. (I definitely do.)

If you’re just getting started with tofu, you might also enjoy my complete guide on how to cook tofu, where I cover everything from choosing the right tofu to my favorite cooking methods.

Why This Is the Only Crispy Tofu Recipe You Need

    • Golden and crispy every time: A light coating of cornstarch creates that irresistible crispy exterior without deep frying.
    • Works with everything: We keep it simple with garlic powder and black pepper, which means this tofu works with pretty much any other flavor you pair it with.
    • Three easy cooking methods: Pan-fry, bake, or air fry, it’s always going to turn out perfect.

    Ingredients for Crispy Tofu

    • Extra-firm or firm tofu: Extra-firm tofu is a bit chewier, while firm tofu is slightly softer, but both crisp up beautifully. No need to press the tofu here. Since we’re not marinating it, simply drain it and pat it dry with a clean towel if it seems especially wet. Want to learn more? Check out my guide on how to press tofu (and when you don’t need to).
    • Soy sauce: Use tamari for a gluten-free option.
    • Light oil: You can omit the oil for an oil-free option; the tofu won’t be as crispy, but it will get lightly crisp in the air fryer.
    • Seasonings: Garlic powder adds savory flavor, while black pepper adds a gentle heat.
    • Cornstarch: Creates the crispy coating. Potato starch is an excellent 1:1 substitute and actually gets even crispier.

    Tips and Variations

    • Gently toss to coat: If you stir too vigorously, the tofu will break apart. (This is especially true if you use firm instead of extra-firm tofu.)
    • Don’t overcrowd the pan: Give the tofu space so it crisps instead of steaming.
    • Flip only after a crust forms: If the tofu sticks to the pan, it probably isn’t ready yet. Once it’s nicely browned, it will release much more easily.
    • Customize the seasoning: This recipe is simple by design, making it a great base. Feel free to add smoked paprika, onion powder, cayenne, curry powder, or your favorite seasoning blend.

    Ways to Use Crispy Tofu

Once you make this tofu, you’ll start adding it to everything! [this section seems like a great place to add internal linking?]

    Storage

Store leftover crispy tofu in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. For the crispiest leftovers, reheat in a skillet or air fryer.
