This homemade take on the viral Dot Cakes is simple to make, uses just a handful of basic ingredients, and tastes absolutely delicious!

You’ve probably seen Dot Cakes all over TikTok. This viral trend has spread like fire, and it’s sparking some serious debate. Some bakers swear it’s a genius revolution, while skeptics claim it’s “just cake and frosting with a fancy name.”

    Homemade Dot Cakes

So, where do I stand? Honestly? I’m somewhere in the middle. One thing I cannot deny is how absolutely adorable these little jars are. If I were still doing kids’ birthday parties, I would’ve made them for sure.

Because they are self contained, these are perfect for a backyard BBQ or a pool party. Tie a little twine and tuck in a wooden spoon for a trendy “thank you” gift, perfect for teachers, neighbors, or a friend.

    Ingredients

    • A box of cake mix; use any flavor you like.
    • Ingredients to make the cake: usually the box says eggs, oil, and water. To make this cake extra special, I used milk and butter instead of water and oil and added an extra egg.
    • Frosting: use store-bought for convenience, or homemade. I’ve a fabulous Marshmallow Frosting and a Simple Cream Cheese Frosting recipe.
    • Sprinkles

    Pro Tip

Don’t throw away the cake scraps! You can snack on the remaining pieces with fresh fruit, or crumble them up and press them into more jars to create a “layered” version of these dot cakes so absolutely nothing goes to waste.

    Viral Dot Cakes

This viral trend is so controversial, some say it is worth it while others think it is just cake with frosting and sprinkles. For me, still undecided but these cute little jars are adorable. Best part is, the recipe is so budget friendly, so I guess you need to try it for yourself.

    Prep Time: 10 minutes minutes

    Cook Time: 35 minutes minutes

    Servings: 10 small cakes

    Instructions

    • Preheat oven to 350°F/180°C. Line a 13×9 baking dish with parchment paper and set aside.

    • In a large bowl add cake mix, butter, milk and eggs.

    • Mixing using a handheld mixer or a whisk, mix all the ingredients well until combines.

    • Pour the cake batter into the baking dish and bake for 30-35 minutes or according to the box directions.

    • Take the cake out of the oven and let it cool down to room temperature.

    • Place the sprinkles into a bowl so it does not get super messy when dipping the cakes over.

    • Using small mason jar or paper cups, press into the cake and up out of the cake.

    • Press on the cake so it rests at the bottom of the jar.

    • Scoop about 1-2 Tablespoons of frosting over the top of the jar and level with an angled spatula or a butter knife.

    • Dip the jar into the sprinkles so they stick to the frosting.

    Notes

    • For the remaining cake, you can snack on them with fruits or press them into other jars to make more dot cakes.

    How to Make Dot Cakes

1- In a large bowl, combine the cake mix, melted butter, milk, and eggs. Use an electric mixer or a sturdy whisk to blend until the batter is smooth. Pour the batter into your prepared baking dish. Bake for 30–35 minutes (or follow the exact timing on your specific cake mix box). Remove from oven and let it cool to room temperature. Do not skip this step, or your frosting will melt right off.

2- Take a small mason jar or a paper cup. Press the rim directly down into the cake, twisting slightly, and lift it back up. Gently press the cake circle down so it rests flat at the very bottom of the jar giving you some room for frosting.

3- Scoop about 1–2 tablespoons of frosting over the top of the cake inside the jar. Use an angled spatula or a butter knife to level the frosting so it sits flush with the rim of the jar.

4- Invert the jar and dip the frosted top directly into your sprinkles, pressing gently so they stick uniformly to the frosting.

I recommend using a tub of sprinkles and dipping the jar directly into it, or pouring the sprinkles into a deep bowl rather than a shallow plate, for less mess.

    FAQs

    How to store Dot Cakes?

If you’re serving these the same day or within a few hours, they’re fine left at room temperature, covered loosely. Otherwise, refrigerate leftovers covered with plastic wrap or a lid up to 4 days.
If giving these as gifts, keep them refrigerated until shortly before handing them off, especially in warm weather, so the frosting doesn’t soften too much.

What kind of jars or cups work best?

Small 4-ounce or 8-ounce wide-mouth mason jars work beautifully because the sides are straight. If you are hosting a kids’ party and want to avoid glass, small, sturdy paper cups or clear plastic portion cups work perfectly too.

Why do you use milk and butter instead of water and oil?

Most boxed cake mixes call for water and vegetable oil. By swapping them out for milk and melted butter (and adding an extra egg), you give the boxed mix a rich, bakery-level flavor and a denser texture that holds up perfectly to being stamped out by the jars.

Can I use a homemade cake recipe instead of a box mix?

Absolutely. Any standard 13×9 cake recipe will work here. Box mix is just used for convenience and cost, but homemade is a great option too.

    Fun Variations to Try

    • Funfetti Dream: Use Funfetti cake mix, vanilla frosting, and rainbow dots.
    • Chocolate Peanut Butter: Chocolate cake mix, peanut butter frosting, mini chips.
    • Berry Summer Crunch: White cake mix, strawberry frosting, freeze-dried berry dust instead of sprinkles.
    • Add mix-ins: Fold crushed cookies, mini chocolate chips, or chopped candy into the frosting before topping the jars for extra texture.
    • Layered look: Instead of one cake layer, alternate thin layers of cake and frosting for a more “trifle” style presentation inside the jar.
    • Themed sprinkles: Match your sprinkles to the occasion. Pastel for spring, red and green for the holidays, your team color for game day, or a mix of metallics for a birthday party.
