No matter how old you may be, cycling is among the best forms of exercise you can engage in. While even a novice likely understands that cycling has a variety of health benefits, not everyone may appreciate what sort of benefits it can impart to women over 50. This article is concerned with helping women over 50 improve their chances of living to a full century by cycling.

    Cycling Relieves Your Knees

One of the most recognizable things that time takes from a human body is the cartilage in our knees. Walking with knees weakened from loss of cartilage becomes increasingly more unpleasant with time. The good news is that the issue of painful transport by foot becomes less of a concern when you choose to take a bike. The effort that goes into operating bike pedals is considerably less than what we use to walk, to the point that low-intensity cycling is commonly recommended for patients with knee injuries. Because a bike requires less pressure on the knees, you can exercise and rest your knees at the same time. Exercising the muscles around your knee joints can prevent them from atrophying and further weakening. If you have lost cartilage or struggle with osteoarthritis, this should certainly be in your interest.

    It Strengthens Your Physique

Cycling does more than assist with keeping you mobile despite compromised knees. It can bolster your general health by helping you to shed unwanted pounds; fewer excess pounds means less drag on your body as you maneuver. In short, acting healthy promotes healthiness. As a form of endurance exercise, cycling is also suited to helping the body develop resistance to diabetes, colon and breast cancer, and heart disease.

    Cycling Elevates Potential

One reason why cycling is often suggested to people over 50 is because it can greatly improve their outlook on their health. No one starts cycling with the build of an athlete. You may not achieve such a build with a cycling routine, however the boost to physical and mental wellness that a good cycling regimen imparts can do wonders. This increased potential can be further enhanced by finding a few friends to bike with; the more the merrier. Even if you can only cycle on your lonesome, the exertion involved in pumping those pedals means that you are encouraging blood to flow throughout your system. Increased blood flow around the brain greatly stimulates a person’s mood and memory. If you can regularly go outside on your bike even once a week, you may begin to notice definitive improvements in the health of your mind and your body.

    Safety Precautions

Before starting any exercise program, you should consult with your doctor. Consider starting with short rides and gently increasing the length over time to reduce injuries. It is important to select a well-fitting bike and safety equipment including a helmet. Choose designated bicycle lanes and routes and always make sure to be visible to motorists. Unfortunately, bicycle accidents are far too common and can result in devastating injuries. In Oklahoma City alone, there were 88 bicycle accidents in 2021.

    In Summary

If you are age 50 or older, a cycle, either a traditional model or an “e-bike,” is just perfect for pursuing a form of exercise that offers many positives worth considering. It is a form of endurance training, that helps the body withstand many common health concerns. It does wonders for getting around. If your knees are already giving you trouble; also, the effort involved in pedaling a bike instead of walking or jogging can strengthen your knees. Further, it can allow you to invigorate your body and mind. Cycling allows you to experience the outdoors, possibly while in the company of other like-minded cyclists. So long as you go about your cycling with a comfortable bike and comfortable gear and strive for at least 150 minutes of cycling a week, you have much to gain from pursuing an exercise regimen that involves a bicycle and protective gear.
