As a child of the Midwest—more specifically, Iowa, born and raised—I come by my love of casseroles honestly. Both my grandma and my mom are well-versed and extremely proficient in these 9- x 13-inch comfort food masterpieces, and have schooled me in how to carry on the tradition with their foolproof recipes for everything from chicken pot pie to green bean casserole to frozen yum yum.

Admittedly, they’re not gourmet cuisine and probably won’t earn Michelin stars any time soon. But whether the star ingredient is broccoli or tuna; chicken or hamburger, the rich results of one-dish dinners are undeniably cozy.

My matriarchs have equipped me with a handful of their tried-and-true recipes. Still, my heart and stomach are always open to new members of the Best Casserole Club. And after spotting a Tater Tot Casserole quickly rising in the ranks on Allrecipes—raking in glowing reviews along the way—I knew it was time to give it a try to see if this was worthy of a spot in my dinner club.

What Makes This Tater Tot Casserole So Special

Recipe creator barryzimm might be a bit biased. However, when they shared their recipe with us, they described it as “a quick and easy dinner that everyone will love. Just four basic ingredients come together for this comforting dish.”

After taking a quick scan of the directions, it was clear that barryzimm wasn’t fibbing about the simplicity. To recreate this dish, all I would have to do is cook ground beef in a skillet, stir in the condensed cream soup and seasonings, dump that into my trusty 9- x 13-inch pan, top with tater tots and cheese, and bake until golden brown.

The results are “aggressively Midwest,” according to Allrecipes member SassyMelt3253, who declares this “great winter comfort food. The results were so flavorful and comforting. This is the kind of dish you just want to douse in Frank’s hot sauce and have like 8 servings.” (That sounds like my kind of party, SassyMelt3253!)

    Tips, Tricks, and Ingredient Swaps

In addition to the ease and the “food hug” factor, one of the biggest selling points: How customizable it is. Here are a few variations and tips, straight from our Allrecipes members and editors.

    • Pick a different protein. Ground beef is far from your only option. If you prefer, try this same Tater Tot Casserole concept with ground pork, turkey, or chicken.
    • Amp up the meat mixture. Similar to how you might add other aromatics or seasonings to ground beef for tacos, feel free to jazz up the foundation here, too. Besides the salt and pepper called for in the recipe, consider shaking in some garlic powder, onion powder, or seasoned salt. If you happen to have extra onion, jalapeños, or mushrooms hanging around, dice them up to sautéing with the meat mixture, too.
    • Veg out. To make this a well-balanced meal in a single package, stir in a bag of frozen mixed vegetables or a can of drained green beans when you add the soup.
    • Crack open a different can. Speaking of the soup, barryzimm recommends cream of mushroom. Allrecipes home cooks confirm that other condensed soups also shine here. Cream of chicken, cream of celery, cheddar cheese soup; choose your own adventure.
    • Swap the spuds. Veggie nuggets like cauliflower, broccoli, or sweet potato veggie tots work just as well as potato tots if you want to sneak in a tiny bit more nutrition.
    • Add some crunch. For a little nod to green bean casserole, as well as extra flavor and satisfying texture, Allrecipes member Lori Hankins Carter likes to add French-fried onions alongside the tots.
    • Get a headstart. Love to meal prep? Assemble the casserole through step 3 (including topping the baking dish with tots and cheese), then wrap well in plastic wrap and aluminum foil. Freeze for up to 4 months, then cook the casserole from frozen for about twice as long as listed in the recipe.

What the Allrecipes Community Has to Say

With all of those options in my apron pocket, along with the glowing reviews below, I’m even more excited to head to the kitchen to confirm what I am nearly positive is true: This is a casserole worthy of teaching mom and grandma to make. It’s time to return a tiny bit of the favor!

    • “I was a little skeptical about the simplicity of this recipe. My family said this was a keeper! This is a great way to use up leftover tater tots!” — SimpleCooking
    • “This was a go-to recipe when I was young, as long ago as the ‘70s. I added canned cut green beans plus a little onion. Cheese wasn’t in the recipe my Mom used so I don’t use it all the time. All in all, it’s an excellent one-pan meal.” — Christine Cusick
    • “I’ve made this several times over the years. I’ve used ground pork sausage in place of the hamburger to make it more of a breakfast dish. My grandkids love it too, so that’s a big plus.” — Jacquelyn
    • “I made this using a 12-inch skillet that can go in the oven. I added some minced garlic and onion powder to the soup and hamburger, layered on a cup of cheese, then laid tater tots and another cup of cheese on top. This way I only have one pan to wash.” — Debby
